Allium

Allium family obtains around 500 species. It’s a colorful pallet of wonderful flowering bulb plants, and here also belong famous kitchen species like black onion, chives and white onion. Everything is characterized by the smell of an onion. Contrary to that, the flowers have a very pleasant smell. In most of the cases those are star-shaped or bell-shaped flowers in thyroid umbel, often in the shape of a globe. Bulbs are planted in March while they are still in a state of dormancy. They should not be planted individually because they come more to the fore in small groups. Because of that it would be desirable to use a larger pot in which to plant more bulbs. Permeable soil suits them more and that is why garden soil is mixed with coarse sand. Bulbs are planted at the depth from 10 to 30cm. If the bulbs are smaller, they are planted shallower. If they already start to take roots they shouldn’t be planted too deep.
